Catchy title for a blog post, don’t you think ? It came to me whilst Angelika and I were ending our final training session in preparation for walking 15 miles of the Sarsen Trail between Avebury and Stonehenge in two weeks time.
It suddenly occurred to me that twelve months ago I could never have contemplated such a venture as walking 15 miles in a good cause.
Back then I smoked , drove everywhere and the farthest I went under my own steam was a four mile round trip by bike to the nearest village.
So you may be asking – what has changed to make me a non smoker , two stone lighter and fitter than I have been in years.
The answer is simple .. I moved to Devizes to be with Angelika.
It all began with being introduced to Angelika’s allotment on the outskirts of town . At first I was simply the apprentice – painting the shed and mowing the grass .. this year I have played a more active part in preparing the beds making them ready for planting .
The walk and the work combined to make me trimmer , the reward of course was eating the fresh vegetables grown on the allotment.
That was only the beginning , Angelika has had a pedometer for years but last year discovered the Fitbit . Essentially this wifi linked device measures every step you take and records it . So good is it that I was treated to one at the beginning of this year. We have not looked back , there is friendly rivalry not only between the two of us but in an online community including Sally and Stuart. The great thing is that when the stats are published a different person is leading the table each time. I will let Sally tell the story of when she zoomed into the lead after 170 mile drive with her fitbit in her luggage measuring each step 🙂
When Angelika was writing her book ‘Wiltshire von A bis Z’ last year we toured the wonderful county of Wiltshire armed with our National Trust cards and boy did we do a lot of walking ! This year we have been given English Heritage membership , who knows where our walking boots will take us ?
Earlier this year Angelika won a competition and among the prizes was a years membership of the local gym. During the winter months we were able to work out 2 or 3 times per week.
And so it is that we are both in fine fettle and looking forward to the Sarsen Trail in two weeks time and we would welcome some encouragement if you would sponsor us.
Thank you Angelika .
It’s a fun-filled, fabulous fundraising day out for the family – a multi-terrain running, walking and mountain biking event, taking you through the Vale of Pewsey, the Avon Valley and then across the beautiful ancient landscape of Salisbury Plain between Avebury and Stonehenge.
And now to the present day , next Sunday will be our fourth Sarsen Trail together and will be the third time I am walking the full 26 miles . I am still so grateful to Angelika for making our lives together awesome .
