In a nutshell: having worked my way through from office junior when I left school at 16 (computers were rare and huge then – we used manual typewriters and log tables!) to management accounting, regional management for a security firm into a great role in the food ingredients industry, then up to London and computer support for some great blue chips, and finally settling in Kent to build my own business and focus on the Internet.

Now I’ve brought together my century-spanning (ok, so that’s just a lucky timing thing, but does add up to well over 15 years) experience of the web together with commercial experience, and focus on Internet marketing strategy – both enabling others to do their own and doing it for them with the team.

What are Blab.im video chats ? An introduction

and why are thousands of people getting involved ?

In the last five + months on Blab I have had more fun than a host of other networks , I have joined in as a guest and talked with people around the globe.

At first I was wary of going onto camera live before people I did not know , so for the first month I explored and watched Blabs on a variety of disparate topics . Then one day Phil Aston was holding one of his ‘Cornwall Blab Hour – Business Networking’ shows and he invited people to join him on camera.

Much to my surprise I did , fifteen minutes later I was bitten by the Blab bug . I wanted to do more , host my own shows – get Blabbing. I have never looked back.

With Jon Upton I host a weekly show every Thursday called Blabbing for Britain . Over the weeks Jon and I have been joined my many guests , friends of old and new friends who we found on Blab . We talk about everything under the sun , people join us on camera for the first time and we have a great time chatting.

So what does a typical Blab look like ?

To take an active part in a Blab you need to be logged in using your Twitter Account

(1) Host

Every Blab has a host . They schedule the Blab , promote it , start it on time and control the proceedings . Every host has moderator powers.

The host may also appoint other people to co-host

(2) Guest

The second seat may be taken by a guest who joins after the Blab has started by calling in .

(3) Open Seat

Every Blab has four seats , two taken by the guest and host . Seats 3 and 4 can be opened at the discretion of the host and more people can join in the chat and ask questions or add their viewpoints to the live discussion.

(4) Viewers

At the top of the screen we can see the avatars of people who are watching live . As a member of the audience yourself you can click on the avatar and follow them both on Twitter and Blab is you wish .

(5) Comments from viewers and (6) Message Box

As a member of the audience (logged in with Twitter) , you can make comments during the course of the discussion. you can also ask text questions by prefixing your question with /Q

(7) Questions from the Audience

When a text question is asked it appears on the left hand side of the screen for the host to see. They can then select the questions and bring them into the discussion.

(8) Blab Promotion

Blabs can be promoted on Twitter and Facebook – before the event , during the event and after the even to promote the replays if the show was recorded.

(9) Blab is a Community.

If you want to connect with the people taking part on camera in the discussion then an automated system gives you the option to do so. This saves time if there are four people on camera.

(10) Audience Numbers

At the top of the screen you cam see two totals . The left hand one is the number of people who have viewed the Blab , the right hand one is the number of people logged in who are watching the show live.

You can watch any Blab without being logged in .

(11) Blab Topic

The topic of the show is decided by the host.

Taking part in a Blab is simple .

(A) Login with Twitter and you can make comments and ask questions whilst watching the show

(B) Going live on air , press the button and at the discretion of the host(s) you can go on camera and join in the video discussion.

Software Challenge – The Problem and the Idea

Ideally software should be designed and written to solve a real world problem , far too often we see new software launched and puzzle at it’s usefulness .

The problem should come before the idea , that way you have already discovered your target market .

If you solution takes away the pain at an equitable price then you can starting designing

Before you do though ask around , find out how commonplace the problem is , this helps you define the size of the potential market.

Over the next few weeks I am developing a solution to a real world problem , you can follow me as the new software evolves

I am looking for alpha testers , constructive suggestions and help .

The problem .

You have written the most amazing blog post ever and you want to promote .

You have an awesome back catalog of old blog posts which are timeless and want promoting.

You want to promote your Blabs , your meetings and your seminars

Next you do not want to restrict promotion to your own works , you want to include friends blogs and activities , both to help them and vary the output on your own channels.

You want also to add interesting posts found while surfing.

Finally you want to set it up quickly and maintain it easily and you want your friends to do the same .

The idea

To create a powerful easy to use Promotion system that can do everything outlined in the problem.

It will export all your WordPress blogs from your websites and import them into the program . you decide which ones to promote, adding hashtags to titles without affecting your blog posts/

The system will then take care of all the promotion.

I started life as a research scientist: I looked at the causes of childhood leukaemia. After 24 years as a researcher I gradually became more interested in how science is communicated (or not) because what people act on is very different from what researchers *know*. Then I got more and more into understanding how *anything* was communicated, not just science. I’ve also worked as a lighting designer for dance companies, written a few books and plays, been a teacher, been a fire-eater and other things I’ve forgotten….. 🙂

We will be talking about ‘Why the written word is so important in our current online environment’

Qualified journalist and advertising copywriter Suzan St Maur has written across an extremely wide range of media in her career and brings that experience and skill now mainly to online applications of the written and spoken word. With a core service offering of bespoke writing for business clients, she is also – increasingly – being asked to train business owners to write their own content via her workshops which are very popular in the UK and Suzan’s native Canada.

Suzan on writing

1. Before you write anything down define not what you want to say, but what your message must achieve.

Yes, absolutely. That one never changes in its theory, but it does change in terms of how it’s delivered. With online business writing today often we’re looking at very different things that our message must achieve according to where in the buying cycle customers and prospects are when they receive it, so we need to refine our message accordingly.

2. Identify your target audience and get to know them very well. No matter how beautifully structured your message is if it doesn’t take into account the real circumstances and needs of the audience, it won’t work. Align your message’s objectives with these circumstances and needs.

Yes, again. However as time goes on we have more and more tools to help us do this, and with increasing accuracy, too. See point 3. below, particularly with media like Search; the latest analytics can tell you so much more about your target audience than traditional methods can.

It offers an opportunity to clearly define your business as the exception to the competition. It can communicate your passions, ethics, expertise, unique selling points and the personality of your company. It should clearly reflect how your business has chosen to operate.’
