How to be a good host on Blab.im – Part 1 @Blab

Share

In the last five + months on Blab I have had more fun than a host of other networks , I have joined in as a guest and talked with people around the globe.

I have also hosted over 30 shows and this week Jon Upton and I will be running our 13th ‘Blabbing for Britain’ show .

There are three sets of people involved in any Blab

Primary Host who arranges the Blab and controls the live show

Guests  Up to 3 guests may also appear live on camera

Audience Who can view the Blab live or watch the replay. If watching live they can appear on camera (see guests) and make comments and ask questions

To host a show NOW.

Creating A Blab

(1)  Choose your Blab title .

Make it as meaningful as you can , if you have  a guest – name your guest and your topic

(2) Select up to three Tags

These will be used by potential viewers when searching for a Blab.

(3) Select an image

If you have a guest use their picture

If you are running a series of Blabs create a show card . I create mine using Relay  (Interview with Craig Carpenter CEO is here )

(4) To host the show at once press [Now]

Finally press [Start Now]

Hosting a Planned Show (with a guest)

The start steps are the same as hosting a show on the spur of the moment , simply set the Blab to start a future date,

Promoting

After you have booked the show you need to build your audience

From within the Blab

1 You can promote on Twitter .  You can edit the tweet and remember to Check the time and edit to your own time zone.

2 You can promote on Facebook . You can edit the text.

3 You can embed the Blab on your website in a blog . Copy the code and paste into your blog post.

When I have create a planned Blab I write a blog post on the topic of the blab and the guest and then embed the Blab within the post. This means people can subscribe to the blab and watch it live on my webpage.

In the run up to the Blab I promote the blog on Twitter , Facebook and LinkedIn.

On the Day of the Blab

Keeping contact with your guest is important especially if it is their first time on Blab . I create a chat on Facebook messenger to enable me to talk to the guest before and during the blab if problems arrive.

On the morning of the Blab I greet them and post the following message

‘I will start the event five minutes early to give people a chance to take their seats and we can check out our settings and promote the Blab as it goes live. We can use Facebook chat as a back channel to communicate during the live event in case of problems . Of course now we are fully prepared we should not have any .

I will make you co-host of the Blab . This has two effects , if I have problems and need to leave the Blab and come back there will still be a live Blab to return to . The second benefit is that the Blab will appear on your own Blab profile page around 20 minutes after the event , you can then repurpose it if you wish by sending out links.

I answer any questions they may have

Then 15 minutes before we start I connect again and we just chat .

I start the Blab 10 minutes before the start time and post the link in the Facebook Messenger chat and tell my guest to click the link and press the Call In button next to my picture

This gives us 10 minutes to

1 Check out sound
2 Check out video
3 I explain the Blab interface to my guest and to everyone watching .
4 We promote the LIVE Blab by Twitter and Facebook.

This warm up period is essential .

Then we can go live and start recording on time .

Interview Blabs

If you have invited someone to be a guest on your show then they are the the person your viewers have come to watch.

To me this means that my job is to lead the discussion and prompt with questions as the interview progresses. I want to hear what my guest has to say and so do the audience.

The job of the host is to make sure everything runs smoothly , we will discuss how to do this in my next blog post.

In the meantime check out Blab yourself by clicking here

Finally .. what do people talk about on BLAB ? EVERYTHING !!

What are Blab.im video chats ? An introduction

Share

and why are thousands of people getting involved ?

Blab-Replays-2

In the last five + months on Blab I have had more fun than a host of other networks , I have joined in as a guest and talked with people around the globe.

At first I was wary of going onto camera live before people I did not know , so for the first month I explored and watched Blabs on a variety of disparate topics . Then one day Phil Aston was holding one of his ‘Cornwall Blab Hour – Business Networking’ shows and he invited people to join him on camera.

Much to my surprise I did , fifteen minutes later I was bitten by the Blab bug . I wanted to do more , host my own shows – get Blabbing. I have never looked back.

With Jon Upton I host a weekly show every Thursday called Blabbing for Britain . Over the weeks Jon and I have been joined my many guests , friends of old and new friends who we found on Blab . We talk about everything under the sun , people join us on camera for the first time and we have a great time chatting.

So what does a typical Blab look like ?

Blab-Blog-02

Let’s take a closer look

Blab-Blog-03

To take an active part in a Blab you need to be logged in using your Twitter Account

(1) Host

Every Blab has a host . They schedule the Blab , promote it , start it on time and control the proceedings . Every host has moderator powers.

The host may also appoint other people to co-host

(2) Guest

The second seat may be taken by a guest who joins after the Blab has started by calling in .

(3) Open Seat

Every Blab has four seats , two taken by the guest and host . Seats 3 and 4 can be opened at the discretion of the host and more people can join in the chat and ask questions or add their viewpoints to the live discussion.

(4) Viewers

At the top of the screen we can see the avatars of people who are watching live . As a member of the audience yourself you can click on the avatar and follow them both on Twitter and Blab is you wish .

(5) Comments from viewers and (6) Message Box

As a member of the audience (logged in with Twitter) , you can make comments during the course of the discussion. you can also ask text questions by prefixing your question with /Q

(7) Questions from the Audience

When a text question is asked it appears on the left hand side of the screen for the host to see. They can then select the questions and bring them into the discussion.

(8) Blab Promotion

Blabs can be promoted on Twitter and Facebook – before the event , during the event and after the even to promote the replays if the show was recorded.

(9) Blab is a Community.

If you want to connect with the people taking part on camera in the discussion then an automated system gives you the option to do so. This saves time if there are four people on camera.

(10) Audience Numbers

At the top of the screen you cam see two totals . The left hand one is the number of people who have viewed the Blab , the right hand one is the number of people logged in who are watching the show live.

You can watch any Blab without being logged in .

(11) Blab Topic

The topic of the show is decided by the host.

Taking part in a Blab is simple .

(A) Login with Twitter and you can make comments and ask questions whilst watching the show

(B) Going live on air , press the button and at the discretion of the host(s) you can go on camera and join in the video discussion.

In my next blog post I will cover best practice in hosting a Blab and how my adventure of interviewing over 20 great friends on camera to a LIVE audience began.

In the meantime check out Blab yourself by clicking here (It takes you to Blab)

Finally .. what do people talk about on BLAB ? EVERYTHING !!

Interview with Barbara Saul about web design , online marketing and WordPress

Share

I interviewed Babs Saul via text as my sound failed in the first five minutes
.
Barbara took control though and in an interesting 30 minute talk gave insights into WordPress, themes , plugins , blogging , collaborative blogs and her plans for the future
We are grateful to Simon Raybould who hopped in to ask questions live and to Lynn Tulip who asked questions tooe

Barbara and I have known each other for over 10 years , in her role as BlogMistress she hosts websites for Angelika and me and many of our friends , She is always there to lend a helping hand when we manage to break the sites , resolving problems without fuss and showing endless patience .

We will be discussing web design , online marketing and of course WordPress .

Wednesday 27Th January 10:00 AM GMT

About Barbara

In a nutshell: having worked my way through from office junior when I left school at 16 (computers were rare and huge then – we used manual typewriters and log tables!) to management accounting, regional management for a security firm into a great role in the food ingredients industry, then up to London and computer support for some great blue chips, and finally settling in Kent to build my own business and focus on the Internet.

Now I’ve brought together my century-spanning (ok, so that’s just a lucky timing thing, but does add up to well over 15 years) experience of the web together with commercial experience, and focus on Internet marketing strategy – both enabling others to do their own and doing it for them with the team.

The rest of the time, I run the Blogmistress which offers every kind of WordPress help you might want.

Blab Interview with Kornelia Santoro , award-winning cookbook writer and author of ‘Cooking for Happiness’

Share

Kornelia and I connected on Empire.Kred , later working together as part of a team to promote the site. Angelika and I were fortunate to meet Kornelia and her son whenwe enjoyed a pleasant afternoon in Berlin last Summer . I am looking forward to the interview and discussing her new book ‘Cooking for Happiness’

Kornelia Santoro is a German writer living in Goa, India, who spezialices in food writing. She has published her experiences of almost two decades cooking Mediterranean food in India for her husband and son on her own website ‘Kornelia’s Kitchen’.

‘Kornelia’s Kitchen’, the cookbook was released on 21st of December 2010.

Kornelia Santoro was born in Ansbach, a small town in northern Bavaria. She studied German language, Political Science and Theatre science in Erlangen and completed training as certified reporter and news editor in Regensburg. She continued to work there for newspapers and radio.

From 1992 until 1994 she rode on an Enfield bullet through India. Finally she settled with her husband, Alberto Santoro, in Goa. 1999 their son Valentino was born.

Writing a cookbook – though suggested by her husband – is a direct result from her upbringing. Both parents, public servants, had experienced the Second World War with its hunger periods. Food was very important for the family and shared meals were the focus of family life. Kornelia Santoro started to collect cook books in her teenage days. Compiling this collection of recipes and describing her experiences has joined two spheres of her existence: writing and the demands of a life as housewife and mother.

In this second interview with Simon we will be looking at the last century of political Catalanism and then bring it right up to date by reviewing the recent Spanish election

The book on which the interview is based ‘Catalonia Is Not Spain: A Historical Perspective’

How much does the world know about Catalonia and its role as a great medieval empire and one of Europe’s first nation states? In Catalonia Is Not Spain: A Historical Perspective author Simon Harris takes the reader through 1,000 years of Catalan history focusing on the Principality’s often difficult relationship with Castile-dominated Spain. This insightful and balanced history gives an insider’s background to the current political situation and why Catalonia is engaged in a process for deciding whether it wants to be independent from Spain.

Barbara Saul Jan 27th 10 am

After 24 years as a researcher I gradually became more interested in how science is communicated (or not) because what people act on is very different from what researchers *know*. Then I got more and more into understanding how *anything* was communicated, not just science. I’ve also worked as a lighting designer for dance companies, written a few books and plays, been a teacher, been a fire-eater and other things I’ve forgotten….. :)’

Video Chat with Suzan St Maur author of How To Write Brilliant Business Blogs

Share

On Wednesday 2nd December at 4pm I am looking forward to chatting to my friend Suzan St Maur whom I have known for the last 10 years on the topic of ‘How to Write Better’ which coincidentally is the name of her website here

SUZE-by-KH-02-June-13-300x277

We will be talking about ‘Why the written word is so important in our current online environment’

Qualified journalist and advertising copywriter Suzan St Maur has written across an extremely wide range of media in her career and brings that experience and skill now mainly to online applications of the written and spoken word. With a core service offering of bespoke writing for business clients, she is also – increasingly – being asked to train business owners to write their own content via her workshops which are very popular in the UK and Suzan’s native Canada.

Suzan on writing

1. Before you write anything down define not what you want to say, but what your message must achieve.

Yes, absolutely. That one never changes in its theory, but it does change in terms of how it’s delivered. With online business writing today often we’re looking at very different things that our message must achieve according to where in the buying cycle customers and prospects are when they receive it, so we need to refine our message accordingly.

2. Identify your target audience and get to know them very well. No matter how beautifully structured your message is if it doesn’t take into account the real circumstances and needs of the audience, it won’t work. Align your message’s objectives with these circumstances and needs.

Yes, again. However as time goes on we have more and more tools to help us do this, and with increasing accuracy, too. See point 3. below, particularly with media like Search; the latest analytics can tell you so much more about your target audience than traditional methods can.

Suzan on blogging

‘Successful blogging for business can generate great results, but it is a long term strategy that requires commitment and creativity. It offers an opportunity to clearly define your business as the exception to the competition. It can communicate your passions, ethics, expertise, unique selling points and the personality of your company. It should clearly reflect how your business has chosen to operate.’

Chat with Julie Bishop of #Jobhop about her #KickStarter Campaign

Share

On Friday at 10:30 I had the pleasure of chatting with Julie Bishop of Jobhop about her current fundraising campaign on KickStarter

We covered the Jobhop site , how it started and Julie’s mission in creating and expanding the site and explained the current Kickstart er campaign to provide communities which can be run by companies on the site.

This will enable members of the site looking for jobs to seek out suitable companies and engage with them prior to applying for a job.

For companies the community facility will increase engagement with potential employees.

The Kickstarter campaign is here

The Jobhop site is here

JobHop is for employees

‘Knowing that Jobhop is the place where great companies come together makes it easier for you to research them. When you have enough knowledge about a company, that knowledge gives you power of choice, are they the company for you? You can ask the question “Is it your preferred company?” Your company of choice may not be the same as someone else’s company of choice, that’s why you should be doing your own research. Choosing the right company can make a huge difference to your career’

Blabbing for Britain using #Blab Hints, Tips and Questions Answered by Steven and Jon [Updated 02 February]

Share

Every Thursday Jon Upton and Steven Healey host Video shows on Blab. We have both hosted Blabs and are enthusiastic Blabistas .

Each show features an introduction to Blab and the latest features .

The Aim

To show you how you can use Blab in your business and your networking activities.

Our goal is to help you to host your own Blab and take part live in other peoples Blabs.

The atmosphere will be  informal and you will discover how easy to use and useful Blab is .

What is Blab ?

Blab is a public video conference with up to four participants live streaming . The system integrates with Twitter and it has its own comments system for viewers to interact and ask questions which the video panel can answer.

Blab requires only a video camera , a microphone and earphones.  There is nothing to download for hosts or viewers . It works on Windows , Mac .there is an Iphone app and on Android it works in your browser

And while there are already group video chats services like Google Hangouts and Skype’s group video call feature, what makes Blab attractive is its focus on social networking and bringing the Twitter community closer together through video. It’s also (at least so far) a lot easier to use than the aforementioned services. Source Mashable
