Video Chat with Suzan St Maur author of How To Write Brilliant Business Blogs

Share

On Wednesday 2nd December at 4pm I am looking forward to chatting to my friend Suzan St Maur whom I have known for the last 10 years on the topic of ‘How to Write Better’ which coincidentally is the name of her website here

SUZE-by-KH-02-June-13-300x277

We will be talking about ‘Why the written word is so important in our current online environment’

Qualified journalist and advertising copywriter Suzan St Maur has written across an extremely wide range of media in her career and brings that experience and skill now mainly to online applications of the written and spoken word. With a core service offering of bespoke writing for business clients, she is also – increasingly – being asked to train business owners to write their own content via her workshops which are very popular in the UK and Suzan’s native Canada.

Suzan on writing

1. Before you write anything down define not what you want to say, but what your message must achieve.

Yes, absolutely. That one never changes in its theory, but it does change in terms of how it’s delivered. With online business writing today often we’re looking at very different things that our message must achieve according to where in the buying cycle customers and prospects are when they receive it, so we need to refine our message accordingly.

2. Identify your target audience and get to know them very well. No matter how beautifully structured your message is if it doesn’t take into account the real circumstances and needs of the audience, it won’t work. Align your message’s objectives with these circumstances and needs.

Yes, again. However as time goes on we have more and more tools to help us do this, and with increasing accuracy, too. See point 3. below, particularly with media like Search; the latest analytics can tell you so much more about your target audience than traditional methods can.

Suzan on blogging

‘Successful blogging for business can generate great results, but it is a long term strategy that requires commitment and creativity. It offers an opportunity to clearly define your business as the exception to the competition. It can communicate your passions, ethics, expertise, unique selling points and the personality of your company. It should clearly reflect how your business has chosen to operate.’

Sarah-Jon-Steven

We thoroughly enjoyed video interviewing our long time good friend Sarah Arrow of Sarkemedia , author of Zero to Blogger , and with Kevin creator of the 30 Day Blogging Challenge .

Sarah , Jon and I have known each other for 10 years since our days on UK based social networking site Ecademy . In those days blogging was just starting to take hold and Sarah was one of the first in our clan to get to grips with the art.

In 2008 Sarah founded the Birds on the Blog website and gathered friends to blog cooperatively on the site . Birds on the Blog won awards from Forbes three years running and today the site is still Motivating Business Women around the world

Sarah and Kevin now run the ultra successful ’30 Day Blog Challenge’ which has helped literally thousands of people to start blogging seriously . The course takes you from novice to competent blogger and you can join the Facebook group here

You may also know Kevin from his Periscope broadcasts and he also has a blog here

Of course we got sidetracked during out chat but we had great fun and learnt a great deal. We are also thrilled that we took part in a Blab first as Jon relayed the broadcast live on the big screen to Solihull Business Club and Sarah took questions from the Club members

The interview covers

Sarah’s first blogs on BT Tradespace – Blog hosting options – Bird on the Blog from its beginnings to winning Forbes awards – The 30 Day Blogging challenge – Hints and tips on blogging.

A Tale of Two Tweets (why some tweets are read more than others) #EmpireAvenue #IALTY

Share

On twitter the size of your audience matters , the more people who see your tweets the better chance you have of being noticed . The aim should be to engage an increasing number of people in your interests and business expertise. This applies especially when you are building your online reputation using Twitter.

In my last blog post I referred to the Tweet activity dashboard

I promoted the blog post in two tweets and monitored their progress using the dashboard

This is the first tweet

tweet-1

As you can see the tweet was viewed a reasonable number of times but there was no further activity.

The second tweet was sent out moments later

tweet-via-empire-avenue

As you can see the text in the tweet is similar to the first one , the reaction however is markedly different

tweet-2-activity

What made such a difference between reactions to the two tweets ?

Why did the second tweet have 7164 views compared to 149 for the first tweet , after all they were both promoting the same blog post and tweeted from the same account.

The second tweet was retweeted by 49 people ; 48 people actually clicked the link , 35 people favourited the tweet , 4 people replied to me and most rewarding 5 people followed me.

The reason is simple ‘the Empire Avenue’ effect . On Empire Avenue you can create a mission asking people to visit a tweet and read it , they are then free to take any other action they wish . I ran a mission 64 people visited the tweet from Empire Avenue and 49 people took further action.

This signifies at least three major points ..

1 If you tweet once and do nothing else you will attract a reasonable number of views. That is the end of the story.

2 The real benefit comes from encouraging interaction on the tweet.

The more people who RT (retweet) you , the larger your audience and the bigger the reaction.

3 Having systems in place that encourage people to promote you.

The key to this is investing time in interacting with people building relationships and trust. This is also known as networking

It really is about engagement and I am still learning daily on how to improve , which is why I joined the #klout70 inititative .

If you have any questions about Empire Avenue or #klout70 then please ask.

Note #IALTY is the tag for ‘Is Anyone Listening to You’ which is the theme of this series of blog posts.

Is anyone listening to you ? .. The Tweet activity dashboard will tell you

Share

In an ideal world every time you tweet every single one of your Twitter followers has the possibility of seeing it.

Simply put your total reach (audience) is your number of followers.

Reach is not the same as the number people reading your tweet.

In fact only 1 or 2% of your followers will be see each of your tweets as a general rule . So if you have 2000 followers , between 20 and 40 people will see your tweet.

If you are retweeted by someone then your potential reach increases. The excellent Tweetreach ( http://tweetreach.com/ ) can measure the potential audience for your Tweets.

Twitter analytics takes this one step further – it gives you all the statistics on each tweet you have sent in the Tweet activity dashboard

You can register for your own Tweet activity dashboard here and there is a full explanation here

The system starts measuring from the day you register , so you may have to wait to see some action.

I have been using the system for several months and below are the daily views of all my tweets over the last 28 days

TwitAn-Summary

The chart shows the number of views day by day , for each tweet you send further information is available . This tweet was promoted using my friends on Empire Avenue

EATweet01

The graphic shows the tweet was seen 6005 times , retweeted by 59 people , 35 people favourited it , 12 people responded in my timeline , 9 clicked on my profile and of those 3 followed me

The other interesting point is that the tweet was posted on Tuesday and was still being seen on Saturday

Tweet02

The life of a tweet was researched by Peter Bray in his blog When Is My Tweet’s Prime of Life?

The Tweet activity dashboard proves you do have an audience . In following blog posts I will look behind the statistics and show how we can use them to improve the level of our readership and can increase both response and interaction.

Sun Park Lanzarote ,a home in the sun

Share

Imagine living just five minutes walk away from sun kissed sandy beaches and clear blue seas , walking along a six mile promenade from the port to the best beaches on the island.

Imagine living in an apartment overlooking two swimming pools within a 5 star hotel complex.

Venturing out of your door in a morning to be met by the smiles of the new friends you have made since arriving.

A short stroll down the road takes you past inexpensive restaurants offering food from around the globe.

Angelika and I were fortunate to be invited to spend a week sampling the delights of Sun Park in Playa Blanca by our friend Steve Hall and can now confirm all of the above really exist .

After a four hour flight with EasyJet from a wet and cold Bristol airport we touched down at Lanzarote airport to be warmly greeted by Steve and were whisked on a short 30 minute journey to Playa Blanca. We had known Steve virtually for several years online and this was a great way to finally meet.

SUN_PARK

sunpark-logo

Our apartment did indeed overlook the two swimming pools , in face every apartment does.

Over the course of the next week we climbed Montana Roja , the volcano (extinct) which protects the town of Play Blanca . We ventured further afield using cheap and reliable public transport and explored the neighbouring towns and coastline including walking barefoot along the length of the beaches at Puerto del Carmen

The one thing that made our stay a pleasure , apart from the fine food and relentless sunshine was being in the Sun Park complex. There is a real sense of community , people visit for a week , a month , six months and some are there all year round. People are quite happy to leave you to do your own thing , however if you make a small effort you become part of the community and are welcomed with open arms. You can become involved in any aspect of Sun Park which attracts you from taking part in Spanish classes to maintaining the gardens and surrounds.

Sun-Park-BIrds Eye

Sun-Park-Volcsno

By the third day of our stay we were totally relaxed and chilled and had started to realise how special Sun Park and its residents are . We spent evenings in the Trust Bar on site where you serve yourself and pay for drinks at low prices into a trust box. We enjoyed a truly magnificent stay , walked over 60 miles in the surrounding area.

Playa Blanca as a whole speaks three languages Spanish , English and German . All local businesses are managed by friendly multi lingual staff .

We will definitely be visiting with Steve at Sun Park ,Playa Blanca again .

Just two questions remain .. when and will you join us ?

Who are you ? Are you on About.me ?

Share

Several years ago I was a member of a UK based networking site and when people asked about me I simply gave them a link to my profile page on the site Unfortunately that website no longer exists and so my search has been for a new home for my profile.

The key to the continued success of my next profile site About.me is that it is ranked by Alexa in the top 1500 sites globally , this means traffic levels which are far ahead of other social profile sites. Your task is to make your profile highly visible on the site , which is far easier than promoting your own blog site.

There are resources on site to help you , a thriving support community and a very large friendly group of site members . Enrolling is both easy and free. You can see my About.me profile here .

About me is the

second of the sites where you can store all your online presences

The benefits

The benefits

Interaction

About.me is more than just a static page to store your pages.

There is interaction – lots of it … you can track all your connections , make new connections.

You can see who has viewed your profile if they are on about.me and of course return the favour.

Interaction

Statistics

About.me tracks the visits to your profile . You can see that until September 2013 there was little activity .

I decided to link all of my major online presences (Facebook , Twitter,LinkedIn) to my about.me account . The results were a major increase in traffic .

As you control what shows on your profile it really is a great , cost free way to market yourself and your services and products.

Attracting traffic to your website is an ongoing battle , the difference with about me is that the site is not just about you , it is about everyone . You can get greater consistent traction by promoting your about.me page

Klout hits the Buffer and still goes steaming down the track.

Share

If you are on twitter you have probably heard of Klout and  love it , hate it or ignore it.

Until now Klout has simply monitored your online activity and given you a Klout score based on how effective it thinks you are . There are arguments for and against how accurate the score is but Klout is well established and I use it not to monitor my score , but the trend  over the months .

Now Klout has had a revamp and has extended the facilities available on the site , which may make it more useful .

Scheduling Posts

Buffer has been the de facto standard for scheduling posts for release at any time of day on any day of the week . In this global village in which we live posting is now a 24 hour a day activity if you want to reach people in all continents. It is very handy if you manage more than one Twitter or Facebook account .

Enter Klout ,

Klout Scheduled Sharing

Your Klout Profile

now shows suggested content to share . You can scroll through the list and select an item by pressing the share button

Your Klout Profile

The share screen is then displayed

and you can set to share on Facebook and/or Twitter (after authorising them)

When you press the schedule button , you can select date and time to share . I set this item to post on my timeline at 2pm Saturday.

The share screen is then displayed

You can review

all your scheduled items .

You can review

As you can see Klout is not as sophisticated as Buffer , you can only at this point in time share content they suggest

They will be providing a metrics system to show you how the Klout sourced content has been received on Twitter and Facebook . So not only are they measuring your performance ,they are helping you to create content.

The interesting thing is the way they have been able to use all those +K you have received from your friends over the years to display content which is relevant to you.

In terms of finding content relevant to your audience this is a good start . Swayy started up last year and do an excellent job in
finding fresh content for you to schedule and share with their free to use package. I wonder if Swayy and Klout might be a good fit.

Mind you both have a long way to go before they can rival Scoop.it . Scoop.it is the best and most cost effective way to gather and share content for your audience . Daily updated content from sources you choose , in topics you choose , a superb page to display it on and a development team which listens to their customers.

These are certainly interesting times in content curation and Klout’s initiative is to be welcomed.

Content Curation For Everyone – Support Your Friends

Share

In the previous blog post I suggested you could use Scoop.it to discover content that is of interest to you (and your friends) which you can then publish using Twitter and Facebook.

The next step is to curate and promote your friends and contacts by promoting the content they post daily on their blogs and on Twitter.

The reason for doing this is two fold .. it helps your friends , it helps your online visibility and it builds up  a hopefully mutual supportive group of people. Even if they do not promote you straight away when they see one of your posts that interests them they are more likely to share.

There is but one problem , in normal circumstances you see your contacts’ posts only when you are online . The odds are you see less than 20% of everything they do . So how are you going to promote them , you may not see their best content when you are online.

The answer is simple and easy to do ..

1 Create a Twitter List of the contacts whose work you are going to promote .

There is no need to include everyone , start with around 20 of your more active contacts and add to the list gradually..

2 Visit Paper.li and create a free account , start a newspaper and add the new twitter list as a source.

3  Paper.li creates a daily newspaper from the tweets (which contain links) made by your contacts about topics of interest to them

Simply read this newspaper and you will find items posted by your contacts and you can share them from within the paper.

Excerpt

You can also embed the newspaper into your website (free of charge)  and as the newspaper is updated daily  so is your website.

This is how I created the Prospect Networking Daily and embedded it into my website .

List.ly brings your Twitter lists to life

Share

Twitter lists help us to make sense out of the chaos and noise on Twitter

We can add people we are interested in to lists allowing us to focus, making Twitter more manageable and useful.Instead of reading the tweets of everyone we follow in one continuous stream we can simply follow several Twitter lists in Hootsuite.

I follow twitter lists I made for of Prospect Networking friends , my list of news feeds , a list by Jorgen Paulsen of Empire Avenue members and one by Annie Diamond for Xeeme

Nick Kellet and the team at List.ly have now added several new dimensions to the new Listing Facility released today .

Now you can create List.ly lists directly from your Twitter lists .

As soon as you publish the list people visiting the list can vote on their favorite people and quickly follow them on Twitter. Twitter lists have been given new life by the team at List.ly .

The list can be sorted by votes , alphabetically and by the date added the the list , you can items in a list you are viewing to one of your own lists.

Finally you can embed any List.ly list into your blog posts

If you want to read more about List.ly and Twitter then you can visit my friend Sarah Arrows blog post here

For a step by step guide visit Mike Gingerich’s site

A couple of years ago I created a Twitter list of celebrities and now it has been List.ly’d . A shortened version appears below , so you can vote for your favourites ,add people to the list, copy them to your own list easily and follow them on Twitter .

Content Creation and Curation for Everyone

Share

Once you have taken the decision to create an online presence the first hurdle you face is – ‘How are you going to create the Content people will want to read ?’ .

There are of course people who output totally self penned content and having crafted it publish and promote it daily.

I am not one of these people , I simply do not have the time for all my content to be self penned. I do however post every day on Facebook,Twitter, Google plus and LinkedIn.

How can I find interesting and topical information created by others in order to share is the key question.

The first step is to determine topics in which I am interested and which will be of interest to my audience. The topics should be relevant to my business however they should be varied in order not to bore anyone who reads my ramblings.

Ideally they should be a mixture of business and personal.

It is possible to use applications which will not only discover fresh content and promote it daily with your contribution limited to simply setting up the system. In this way you have a daily presence but it is not personal, people will quickly realise this and stop reading.

We need systems which will alert us to relevant information and allow us to select items and comment on them before promoting them via Twitter and Facebook.

In the next blog posts I will be taking an in depth review of the systems I have used successfully over the last two years . We will be exploring Scoop.it , Swayy , GaggleAmp and more including Empire Avenue

At the end of the series of blog posts you will have at your fingertips a number of free resources which will help create and maintain a presence online and build your reputation.

The next blog post in there series is here  and this one tells you how to help your friends too .

101 Things to do with a Brick

Share

This is my first blog post on my new site and my first blog for a while since I have been busy writing software for distributors and manufacturers for the last six months.

Blogs posts can be planned , created as a result of hard work and perspiration or can simply be inspired . This blog is the latter.

I am inspired by two recent happenings , being invited to guest blog on a very sociable blogging network and my use of the wonderful software created by Nick Kellet and his team at List.ly .

Many of us like to make lists , to do lists , shopping lists and reminder lists .

Then there are the bloggers who write posts which are essentially lists giving 101 useful Twitter applications , 7 places to source content for your blog .. the lists are endless.

The genius of a list blog is that we are attracted by the use of numbers in a title and we are ever hopeful of finding just one gem in the list that will be extremely useful.

Now I have started a list grandly entitled ‘101 Things to do with a Brick ‘ and it is a list with a difference , at the moment it is incomplete and I have left it so that you can add your own ideas . You will be helping to create this blog post and your ideas will be promoted.

For this is no ordinary blog post , it is an interactive blog and in addition to commenting you can  help build a list

Of course this is not a really useful list , but it is an experiment in blogging .
