What are Blab.im video chats ? An introduction

Share

and why are thousands of people getting involved ?

Blab-Replays-2

In the last five + months on Blab I have had more fun than a host of other networks , I have joined in as a guest and talked with people around the globe.

At first I was wary of going onto camera live before people I did not know , so for the first month I explored and watched Blabs on a variety of disparate topics . Then one day Phil Aston was holding one of his ‘Cornwall Blab Hour – Business Networking’ shows and he invited people to join him on camera.

Much to my surprise I did , fifteen minutes later I was bitten by the Blab bug . I wanted to do more , host my own shows – get Blabbing. I have never looked back.

With Jon Upton I host a weekly show every Thursday called Blabbing for Britain . Over the weeks Jon and I have been joined my many guests , friends of old and new friends who we found on Blab . We talk about everything under the sun , people join us on camera for the first time and we have a great time chatting.

So what does a typical Blab look like ?

Blab-Blog-02

Let’s take a closer look

Blab-Blog-03

To take an active part in a Blab you need to be logged in using your Twitter Account

(1) Host

Every Blab has a host . They schedule the Blab , promote it , start it on time and control the proceedings . Every host has moderator powers.

The host may also appoint other people to co-host

(2) Guest

The second seat may be taken by a guest who joins after the Blab has started by calling in .

(3) Open Seat

Every Blab has four seats , two taken by the guest and host . Seats 3 and 4 can be opened at the discretion of the host and more people can join in the chat and ask questions or add their viewpoints to the live discussion.

(4) Viewers

At the top of the screen we can see the avatars of people who are watching live . As a member of the audience yourself you can click on the avatar and follow them both on Twitter and Blab is you wish .

(5) Comments from viewers and (6) Message Box

As a member of the audience (logged in with Twitter) , you can make comments during the course of the discussion. you can also ask text questions by prefixing your question with /Q

(7) Questions from the Audience

When a text question is asked it appears on the left hand side of the screen for the host to see. They can then select the questions and bring them into the discussion.

(8) Blab Promotion

Blabs can be promoted on Twitter and Facebook – before the event , during the event and after the even to promote the replays if the show was recorded.

(9) Blab is a Community.

If you want to connect with the people taking part on camera in the discussion then an automated system gives you the option to do so. This saves time if there are four people on camera.

(10) Audience Numbers

At the top of the screen you cam see two totals . The left hand one is the number of people who have viewed the Blab , the right hand one is the number of people logged in who are watching the show live.

You can watch any Blab without being logged in .

(11) Blab Topic

The topic of the show is decided by the host.

Taking part in a Blab is simple .

(A) Login with Twitter and you can make comments and ask questions whilst watching the show

(B) Going live on air , press the button and at the discretion of the host(s) you can go on camera and join in the video discussion.

In my next blog post I will cover best practice in hosting a Blab and how my adventure of interviewing over 20 great friends on camera to a LIVE audience began.

In the meantime check out Blab yourself by clicking here (It takes you to Blab)

Finally .. what do people talk about on BLAB ? EVERYTHING !!

Interview with Barbara Saul about web design , online marketing and WordPress

Share

I interviewed Babs Saul via text as my sound failed in the first five minutes
.
Barbara took control though and in an interesting 30 minute talk gave insights into WordPress, themes , plugins , blogging , collaborative blogs and her plans for the future
We are grateful to Simon Raybould who hopped in to ask questions live and to Lynn Tulip who asked questions tooe

Barbara and I have known each other for over 10 years , in her role as BlogMistress she hosts websites for Angelika and me and many of our friends , She is always there to lend a helping hand when we manage to break the sites , resolving problems without fuss and showing endless patience .

We will be discussing web design , online marketing and of course WordPress .

Wednesday 27Th January 10:00 AM GMT

About Barbara

In a nutshell: having worked my way through from office junior when I left school at 16 (computers were rare and huge then – we used manual typewriters and log tables!) to management accounting, regional management for a security firm into a great role in the food ingredients industry, then up to London and computer support for some great blue chips, and finally settling in Kent to build my own business and focus on the Internet.

Now I’ve brought together my century-spanning (ok, so that’s just a lucky timing thing, but does add up to well over 15 years) experience of the web together with commercial experience, and focus on Internet marketing strategy – both enabling others to do their own and doing it for them with the team.

The rest of the time, I run the Blogmistress which offers every kind of WordPress help you might want.

Blab Interview with Kornelia Santoro , award-winning cookbook writer and author of ‘Cooking for Happiness’

Share

Kornelia and I connected on Empire.Kred , later working together as part of a team to promote the site. Angelika and I were fortunate to meet Kornelia and her son whenwe enjoyed a pleasant afternoon in Berlin last Summer . I am looking forward to the interview and discussing her new book ‘Cooking for Happiness’

Kornelia Santoro is a German writer living in Goa, India, who spezialices in food writing. She has published her experiences of almost two decades cooking Mediterranean food in India for her husband and son on her own website ‘Kornelia’s Kitchen’.

‘Kornelia’s Kitchen’, the cookbook was released on 21st of December 2010.

Kornelia Santoro was born in Ansbach, a small town in northern Bavaria. She studied German language, Political Science and Theatre science in Erlangen and completed training as certified reporter and news editor in Regensburg. She continued to work there for newspapers and radio.

From 1992 until 1994 she rode on an Enfield bullet through India. Finally she settled with her husband, Alberto Santoro, in Goa. 1999 their son Valentino was born.

Writing a cookbook – though suggested by her husband – is a direct result from her upbringing. Both parents, public servants, had experienced the Second World War with its hunger periods. Food was very important for the family and shared meals were the focus of family life. Kornelia Santoro started to collect cook books in her teenage days. Compiling this collection of recipes and describing her experiences has joined two spheres of her existence: writing and the demands of a life as housewife and mother.

Software Challenge – The Problem and the Idea

Share

Ideally software should be designed and written to solve a real world problem , far too often we see new software launched and puzzle at it’s usefulness .

The problem should come before the idea , that way you have already discovered your target market .

If you solution takes away the pain at an equitable price then you can starting designing

Before you do though ask around , find out how commonplace the problem is , this helps you define the size of the potential market.

Over the next few weeks I am developing a solution to a real world problem , you can follow me as the new software evolves

I am looking for alpha testers , constructive suggestions and help .

The problem .

You have written the most amazing blog post ever and you want to promote .

You have an awesome back catalog of old blog posts which are timeless and want promoting.

You want to promote your Blabs , your meetings and your seminars

Next you do not want to restrict promotion to your own works , you want to include friends blogs and activities , both to help them and vary the output on your own channels.

You want also to add interesting posts found while surfing.

Finally you want to set it up quickly and maintain it easily and you want your friends to do the same .

The idea

To create a powerful easy to use Promotion system that can do everything outlined in the problem.

It will export all your WordPress blogs from your websites and import them into the program . you decide which ones to promote, adding hashtags to titles without affecting your blog posts/

The system will then take care of all the promotion.

How can you get involved (and earn a free copy) ?

Please tweet this blog post and I will get in touch.

Simon Raybould and I really enjoyed chatting about Presentations. We have known each other for the last 10 years and

Simon explored :

Presentation Techniques \ Practicing \ Repetition \Clarity and overloading.

The session will give you an overview of the art and science of presenting and you should enjoy some laughs along the way.

Simon says

‘I started life as a research scientist: I looked at the causes of childhood leukaemia. After 24 years as a researcher I gradually became more interested in how science is communicated (or not) because what people act on is very different from what researchers *know*. Then I got more and more into understanding how *anything* was communicated, not just science. I’ve also worked as a lighting designer for dance companies, written a few books and plays, been a teacher, been a fire-eater and other things I’ve forgotten….. :)’

Interview with Simon Harris author of #Catalonia Is Not #Spain

Share

A fascinating interview with Simon Harris author of #Catalonia Is Not #Spain.

Over the course of an hour Simon covered the history of Catalonia from it’s beginnings to the present day

A history lesson bringing the struggles and triumphs to life.

The book on which the interview is based ‘Catalonia Is Not Spain: A Historical Perspective’

How much does the world know about Catalonia and its role as a great medieval empire and one of Europe’s first nation states? In Catalonia Is Not Spain: A Historical Perspective author Simon Harris takes the reader through 1,000 years of Catalan history focusing on the Principality’s often difficult relationship with Castile-dominated Spain. This insightful and balanced history gives an insider’s background to the current political situation and why Catalonia is engaged in a process for deciding whether it wants to be independent from Spain.

About Simon

I have lived in Barcelona, capital of Catalonia, since 1988, where I have had a career as a minor rock star and then a university-level teacher of English and translator. My main writing topics are Catalan history, language and culture. I had my first book Going Native in Catalonia published by Native Spain in 2008 and self-published Catalonia Is Not Spain: A Historical Perspective in late 2014

Video Chat with Suzan St Maur author of How To Write Brilliant Business Blogs

Share

On Wednesday 2nd December at 4pm I am looking forward to chatting to my friend Suzan St Maur whom I have known for the last 10 years on the topic of ‘How to Write Better’ which coincidentally is the name of her website here

SUZE-by-KH-02-June-13-300x277

We will be talking about ‘Why the written word is so important in our current online environment’

Qualified journalist and advertising copywriter Suzan St Maur has written across an extremely wide range of media in her career and brings that experience and skill now mainly to online applications of the written and spoken word. With a core service offering of bespoke writing for business clients, she is also – increasingly – being asked to train business owners to write their own content via her workshops which are very popular in the UK and Suzan’s native Canada.

Suzan on writing

1. Before you write anything down define not what you want to say, but what your message must achieve.

Yes, absolutely. That one never changes in its theory, but it does change in terms of how it’s delivered. With online business writing today often we’re looking at very different things that our message must achieve according to where in the buying cycle customers and prospects are when they receive it, so we need to refine our message accordingly.

2. Identify your target audience and get to know them very well. No matter how beautifully structured your message is if it doesn’t take into account the real circumstances and needs of the audience, it won’t work. Align your message’s objectives with these circumstances and needs.

Yes, again. However as time goes on we have more and more tools to help us do this, and with increasing accuracy, too. See point 3. below, particularly with media like Search; the latest analytics can tell you so much more about your target audience than traditional methods can.

Suzan on blogging

‘Successful blogging for business can generate great results, but it is a long term strategy that requires commitment and creativity. It offers an opportunity to clearly define your business as the exception to the competition. It can communicate your passions, ethics, expertise, unique selling points and the personality of your company. It should clearly reflect how your business has chosen to operate.’

Chat with Julie Bishop of #Jobhop about her #KickStarter Campaign

Share

On Friday at 10:30 I had the pleasure of chatting with Julie Bishop of Jobhop about her current fundraising campaign on KickStarter

We covered the Jobhop site , how it started and Julie’s mission in creating and expanding the site and explained the current Kickstart er campaign to provide communities which can be run by companies on the site.

This will enable members of the site looking for jobs to seek out suitable companies and engage with them prior to applying for a job.

For companies the community facility will increase engagement with potential employees.

The Kickstarter campaign is here

The Jobhop site is here

JobHop is for employees

‘Knowing that Jobhop is the place where great companies come together makes it easier for you to research them. When you have enough knowledge about a company, that knowledge gives you power of choice, are they the company for you? You can ask the question “Is it your preferred company?” Your company of choice may not be the same as someone else’s company of choice, that’s why you should be doing your own research. Choosing the right company can make a huge difference to your career’

Blabbing for Britain using #Blab Hints, Tips and Questions Answered by Steven and Jon [Updated 02 February]

Share

Every Thursday Jon Upton and Steven Healey host Video shows on Blab. We have both hosted Blabs and are enthusiastic Blabistas .

Each show features an introduction to Blab and the latest features .

The Aim

To show you how you can use Blab in your business and your networking activities.

Our goal is to help you to host your own Blab and take part live in other peoples Blabs.

The atmosphere will be  informal and you will discover how easy to use and useful Blab is .

What is Blab ?

Blab is a public video conference with up to four participants live streaming . The system integrates with Twitter and it has its own comments system for viewers to interact and ask questions which the video panel can answer.

Blab requires only a video camera , a microphone and earphones.  There is nothing to download for hosts or viewers . It works on Windows , Mac .there is an Iphone app and on Android it works in your browser

And while there are already group video chats services like Google Hangouts and Skype’s group video call feature, what makes Blab attractive is its focus on social networking and bringing the Twitter community closer together through video. It’s also (at least so far) a lot easier to use than the aforementioned services. Source Mashable

Steven’s Short Twitter Survey – The Results – Part 1

Share

In April I decided to test Google Forms by creating a poll based on Twitter.

I asked a series of multiple choice questions and also asked for comments.

I then embedded the form in my WordPress blog.

To encourage people to take part in the survey I ran missions on Empire Avenue , tweeted of course and mentioned the survey on my Facebook timeline and in the groups I run there.

I am grateful to the 119 friends who completed the survey , they are all active on social media daily and represent a good cross section of Twitter users.

It is now time to publish the results , Part 1 today and Part 2 next week

How long have you been Tweeting ?

The figures show that the vast majority of people have been using Twitter for 2 years or more , some are still using it since it started and new people are joining

How long have you been Tweeting ?

Number of Followers

In Twitter as in other social networks there is no one way to run your account , you should run it at the level that suits you.

The more people who follow you , the greater your potential audience and the more people can see your tweets.

If you decide to grow your audience , you can use the free GROW YOUR ACCOUNT facilities at Unfollowers.com

Number of Followers

How many times do you Tweet per Day ?

Having a Twitter account is one thing , using it effectively is another . Again there is no wrong way to do it (unless you start annoying people)

The majority of people in the survey tweet up to 10 times per day (63) , a number of people tweet up to 20 times a day (including me) (27).

We can see that a significant number tweet up to or over 50 times per day

How many times do you Tweet per Day ?

What Percentage of Tweets are automated ?

We can tweet live from a wide variety of applications , but our audience is global and the biggest benefit of automation is to send out tweets to our contacts when we are asleep or not online.

50 people in the survey do not use any automation , what you see are tweets they have posted live.

A significant number (30) automate a third of their twitter output . This is the level I operate at using Scoop.it , Scredible and Hootsuite

A small number automate 50% of their tweets and 17 people use automation over 75% of the time.

My perspective is that most of the time when I tweet I am online and people can see my tweets and can respond and start a conversation

There is a debate as to whether Twitter is a broadcast medium or is for conversation , ideally it is a mix of those.

What Percentage of Tweets are automated ?

What are the benefits of using Twitter ?

I asked people to write about the benefits of using Twitter , these quotes are selected from the responses

A constant stream of stuff, like a never ending magazine that you can open any time and leaf through the pages’near real-time ‘conversations’ with friends all over the world.’

Brand engagement and reinforcement

Connecting to an international community of doctors, researchers, healthcare providers and patients and that would otherwise be unavailable to me. Conferences, journals and webcasts are also made available via Twitter.

I’m really not sure…

Driving traffic to my blog to gain readership, meet new people and learn.

For me it is essentially a very useful means of gathering news and opinions globally. Additionally, it is useful for political interaction and, rarely, personal interaction.

Get instant feedback about your products and/or services

Has helped me build a strong audience for my blog, website, apps and business in general.  It is the best Social Media channel for me and my business.

Spread important news, quick turnaround, lead generation and branding

Requests for help.

Updating followers.

See things I wouldn’t otherwise see. Develop mutually- helpful relationships

social interaction, empowering sharing of good content from others, news

Networking, getting sustainable informations, raising awareness about human rights issues.

Quickly able to spread the word or message that I need to.

Meeting people at a grassroots level, I’m a journalist and they are the one’s who really know what’s going, can tell you the real story.

Social interaction, empowering sharing of good content from others, news

Again a BIG thank you to everyone who took part in the survey 🙂

A Tale of Two Tweets (why some tweets are read more than others) #EmpireAvenue #IALTY

Share

On twitter the size of your audience matters , the more people who see your tweets the better chance you have of being noticed . The aim should be to engage an increasing number of people in your interests and business expertise. This applies especially when you are building your online reputation using Twitter.

In my last blog post I referred to the Tweet activity dashboard

I promoted the blog post in two tweets and monitored their progress using the dashboard

This is the first tweet

tweet-1

As you can see the tweet was viewed a reasonable number of times but there was no further activity.

The second tweet was sent out moments later

tweet-via-empire-avenue

As you can see the text in the tweet is similar to the first one , the reaction however is markedly different

tweet-2-activity

What made such a difference between reactions to the two tweets ?

Why did the second tweet have 7164 views compared to 149 for the first tweet , after all they were both promoting the same blog post and tweeted from the same account.

The second tweet was retweeted by 49 people ; 48 people actually clicked the link , 35 people favourited the tweet , 4 people replied to me and most rewarding 5 people followed me.

The reason is simple ‘the Empire Avenue’ effect . On Empire Avenue you can create a mission asking people to visit a tweet and read it , they are then free to take any other action they wish . I ran a mission 64 people visited the tweet from Empire Avenue and 49 people took further action.

This signifies at least three major points ..

1 If you tweet once and do nothing else you will attract a reasonable number of views. That is the end of the story.

2 The real benefit comes from encouraging interaction on the tweet.

The more people who RT (retweet) you , the larger your audience and the bigger the reaction.

3 Having systems in place that encourage people to promote you.

The key to this is investing time in interacting with people building relationships and trust. This is also known as networking

It really is about engagement and I am still learning daily on how to improve , which is why I joined the #klout70 inititative .

If you have any questions about Empire Avenue or #klout70 then please ask.

Note #IALTY is the tag for ‘Is Anyone Listening to You’ which is the theme of this series of blog posts.

Send to Kindle

Share

Is anyone listening to you ? .. The Tweet activity dashboard will tell you

Share

In an ideal world every time you tweet every single one of your Twitter followers has the possibility of seeing it.

Simply put your total reach (audience) is your number of followers.

Reach is not the same as the number people reading your tweet.

In fact only 1 or 2% of your followers will be see each of your tweets as a general rule . So if you have 2000 followers , between 20 and 40 people will see your tweet.

If you are retweeted by someone then your potential reach increases. The excellent Tweetreach ( http://tweetreach.com/ ) can measure the potential audience for your Tweets.

Twitter analytics takes this one step further – it gives you all the statistics on each tweet you have sent in the Tweet activity dashboard

You can register for your own Tweet activity dashboard here and there is a full explanation here

The system starts measuring from the day you register , so you may have to wait to see some action.

I have been using the system for several months and below are the daily views of all my tweets over the last 28 days

TwitAn-Summary

The chart shows the number of views day by day , for each tweet you send further information is available . This tweet was promoted using my friends on Empire Avenue

EATweet01

The graphic shows the tweet was seen 6005 times , retweeted by 59 people , 35 people favourited it , 12 people responded in my timeline , 9 clicked on my profile and of those 3 followed me

The other interesting point is that the tweet was posted on Tuesday and was still being seen on Saturday

Tweet02

The life of a tweet was researched by Peter Bray in his blog When Is My Tweet’s Prime of Life?

The Tweet activity dashboard proves you do have an audience . In following blog posts I will look behind the statistics and show how we can use them to improve the level of our readership and can increase both response and interaction.

Sun Park Lanzarote ,a home in the sun

Share

Imagine living just five minutes walk away from sun kissed sandy beaches and clear blue seas , walking along a six mile promenade from the port to the best beaches on the island.

Imagine living in an apartment overlooking two swimming pools within a 5 star hotel complex.

Venturing out of your door in a morning to be met by the smiles of the new friends you have made since arriving.

A short stroll down the road takes you past inexpensive restaurants offering food from around the globe.

Angelika and I were fortunate to be invited to spend a week sampling the delights of Sun Park in Playa Blanca by our friend Steve Hall and can now confirm all of the above really exist .

After a four hour flight with EasyJet from a wet and cold Bristol airport we touched down at Lanzarote airport to be warmly greeted by Steve and were whisked on a short 30 minute journey to Playa Blanca. We had known Steve virtually for several years online and this was a great way to finally meet.

SUN_PARK

sunpark-logo

Our apartment did indeed overlook the two swimming pools , in face every apartment does.

Over the course of the next week we climbed Montana Roja , the volcano (extinct) which protects the town of Play Blanca . We ventured further afield using cheap and reliable public transport and explored the neighbouring towns and coastline including walking barefoot along the length of the beaches at Puerto del Carmen

The one thing that made our stay a pleasure , apart from the fine food and relentless sunshine was being in the Sun Park complex. There is a real sense of community , people visit for a week , a month , six months and some are there all year round. People are quite happy to leave you to do your own thing , however if you make a small effort you become part of the community and are welcomed with open arms. You can become involved in any aspect of Sun Park which attracts you from taking part in Spanish classes to maintaining the gardens and surrounds.

Sun-Park-BIrds Eye

Sun-Park-Volcsno

By the third day of our stay we were totally relaxed and chilled and had started to realise how special Sun Park and its residents are . We spent evenings in the Trust Bar on site where you serve yourself and pay for drinks at low prices into a trust box. We enjoyed a truly magnificent stay , walked over 60 miles in the surrounding area.

Playa Blanca as a whole speaks three languages Spanish , English and German . All local businesses are managed by friendly multi lingual staff .

We will definitely be visiting with Steve at Sun Park ,Playa Blanca again .

Just two questions remain .. when and will you join us ?

Who are you ? Are you on About.me ?

Share

Several years ago I was a member of a UK based networking site and when people asked about me I simply gave them a link to my profile page on the site Unfortunately that website no longer exists and so my search has been for a new home for my profile.

The key to the continued success of my next profile site About.me is that it is ranked by Alexa in the top 1500 sites globally , this means traffic levels which are far ahead of other social profile sites. Your task is to make your profile highly visible on the site , which is far easier than promoting your own blog site.

There are resources on site to help you , a thriving support community and a very large friendly group of site members . Enrolling is both easy and free. You can see my About.me profile here .

About me is the

second of the sites where you can store all your online presences

The benefits

The benefits

Interaction

About.me is more than just a static page to store your pages.

There is interaction – lots of it … you can track all your connections , make new connections.

You can see who has viewed your profile if they are on about.me and of course return the favour.

Interaction

Statistics

About.me tracks the visits to your profile . You can see that until September 2013 there was little activity .

I decided to link all of my major online presences (Facebook , Twitter,LinkedIn) to my about.me account . The results were a major increase in traffic .

As you control what shows on your profile it really is a great , cost free way to market yourself and your services and products.

Attracting traffic to your website is an ongoing battle , the difference with about me is that the site is not just about you , it is about everyone . You can get greater consistent traction by promoting your about.me page

Klout hits the Buffer and still goes steaming down the track.

Share

If you are on twitter you have probably heard of Klout and  love it , hate it or ignore it.

Until now Klout has simply monitored your online activity and given you a Klout score based on how effective it thinks you are . There are arguments for and against how accurate the score is but Klout is well established and I use it not to monitor my score , but the trend  over the months .

Now Klout has had a revamp and has extended the facilities available on the site , which may make it more useful .

Scheduling Posts

Buffer has been the de facto standard for scheduling posts for release at any time of day on any day of the week . In this global village in which we live posting is now a 24 hour a day activity if you want to reach people in all continents. It is very handy if you manage more than one Twitter or Facebook account .

Enter Klout ,

Klout Scheduled Sharing

Your Klout Profile

now shows suggested content to share . You can scroll through the list and select an item by pressing the share button

Your Klout Profile

The share screen is then displayed

and you can set to share on Facebook and/or Twitter (after authorising them)

When you press the schedule button , you can select date and time to share . I set this item to post on my timeline at 2pm Saturday.

The share screen is then displayed

You can review

all your scheduled items .

You can review

As you can see Klout is not as sophisticated as Buffer , you can only at this point in time share content they suggest

They will be providing a metrics system to show you how the Klout sourced content has been received on Twitter and Facebook . So not only are they measuring your performance ,they are helping you to create content.

The interesting thing is the way they have been able to use all those +K you have received from your friends over the years to display content which is relevant to you.

In terms of finding content relevant to your audience this is a good start . Swayy started up last year and do an excellent job in
finding fresh content for you to schedule and share with their free to use package. I wonder if Swayy and Klout might be a good fit.

Mind you both have a long way to go before they can rival Scoop.it . Scoop.it is the best and most cost effective way to gather and share content for your audience . Daily updated content from sources you choose , in topics you choose , a superb page to display it on and a development team which listens to their customers.

These are certainly interesting times in content curation and Klout’s initiative is to be welcomed.

Who are you ? Are you on Xeeme ?

Share

Several years ago I was a member of a UK based networking site and when people asked about me I simply gave them a link to my profile page on the site Unfortunately that website no longer exists and so my search has been for a new home for my profile.

Ideallly you want a page which people will want to visit which stores a short biography and then links to your main Social presences , you also want a place is is visible to everyone . This rules out Facebook as in order to view a profile you have to be a member of Facebook . LinkedIn does give you a public profile page , but does not show as much information as members of LinkedIn can see .

Over the course of this week I will look at three or four sites which close to providing a great profile page  Xeeme , About.me and newcomer Follr.me

There is no ideal solution , there is choice and you can simply select the one which suits your needs. If you know of other sites which perform the same function please let me know.

Xeeme Overview ( “Xeeme Main Page” )

I have been using Xeeme for about 3 years and it has definitely helped promote my social presence

There is an active Facebook support group ( “Xeeme on Facebook” ) . The management team of Axel Schultze ,Marita Roebkes and Rob Stevenson are very involved and ultra responsive to Xeeme members input .The forum is very active and over the years many friendships have grown. It is a community in the true sense of the word.

As a well connected person or brand you keep in touch on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, SlideShare, Google+, maybe Pinterest, various groups and other places and spaces. Instead of sharing all those URLs or let your contacts search for you, give them a single URL:

Xeeme Advantages

Setting up a Xeeme account is straight forward .

You simply add links to all your sites and they are then presented on one page.

If you then give someone a link to your Xeeme page they can quickly see and visit all your online presences

They do not need to have their own Xeeme account .

My Xeeme is here “Steven’s Xeeme”

Xeeme Future

The profile site is just one aspect of Xeeme.

In 2013 Society 3 who run Xeeme also launched Buzz , a highly effective social content promotion system.

Content Curation For Everyone – Support Your Friends

Share

In the previous blog post I suggested you could use Scoop.it to discover content that is of interest to you (and your friends) which you can then publish using Twitter and Facebook.

The next step is to curate and promote your friends and contacts by promoting the content they post daily on their blogs and on Twitter.

The reason for doing this is two fold .. it helps your friends , it helps your online visibility and it builds up  a hopefully mutual supportive group of people. Even if they do not promote you straight away when they see one of your posts that interests them they are more likely to share.

There is but one problem , in normal circumstances you see your contacts’ posts only when you are online . The odds are you see less than 20% of everything they do . So how are you going to promote them , you may not see their best content when you are online.

The answer is simple and easy to do ..

1 Create a Twitter List of the contacts whose work you are going to promote .

There is no need to include everyone , start with around 20 of your more active contacts and add to the list gradually..

2 Visit Paper.li and create a free account , start a newspaper and add the new twitter list as a source.

3  Paper.li creates a daily newspaper from the tweets (which contain links) made by your contacts about topics of interest to them

Simply read this newspaper and you will find items posted by your contacts and you can share them from within the paper.

Excerpt

Excerpt

You can also embed the newspaper into your website (free of charge)  and as the newspaper is updated daily  so is your website.

This is how I created the Prospect Networking Daily and embedded it into my website .

Letters from Wiltshire

Share

Dear Reader

Most weekends Angelika and I go for a walk in the wonderful countryside around Wiltshire , there are so many places to explore and although we visited 26 (and more) of them last year when Angelika wrote her book ‘Wiltshire von A bis Z ‘ there are still many places to see .

Last weekend was no different but we had a mission – to buy bread and cakes from Michael the German baker who had a stall at a fayre in Tidworth . There was very little publicity about the event so we set of on our journey armed only with a postcode.

We drove to Tidworth across Salisbury plain and parked on the Tesco car park and set off in search of the Fayre. Tidworth is a garrison town with army bases nearby , a civilian population of 9,500 and is the birthplace of James Blunt.

From the car park we headed left and followed a route on The Ave which leads to Tidworth Park . The park is a green open space and is ringed by signs saying ‘The public are free to use the park however HM Forces reserve the right to restrict access’ . We followed the road to the roundabout and found ourselves directly in fron of the spendid facade of Tedworth House , which is run by Help for Heroes as a Recovery Centre. We explored the outer grounds and despite Google Maps saying we were in the correct postcode still , there was no sign of a fayre.

Attribution: Andrew Mathewson

We decided to walk on and found ourselves walking next to Tidworth Polo Club , which we subsequently learned has the largest membership of any polo club in the country , including Prince Charles , Prince Harry and Prince William.

So far we had walked about two miles and admitted that the fayre was nowhere to be seen. In the distance we could see vehicles and a road which we headed towards. We found ourselves at the Tidworth water treatment plant and a van was parked outside , the driver was just locking the gates . We engaged him in conversation and asked whether he had heard about the fayre and the location . He was very friendly and helpful but had not heard about the fayre. We asked the best way back into town and he advised not to use the road we are going toward but to retrace our steps back into town.

We walked away arm in arm , there may be no fayre to be found but we could have a snack on our return to Tesco. We did retrace our steps alongside the polo ground and in 15 minutes , with sodden feet had reach the road leading to Tedworth house.

As we reached the road a white van headed towards us bearing the water company logo , we stopped to give him room to get by on the single track road . We then recognised the driver , it was the gentleman we had spoken to earlier . He wound down his window and said he has found the Fayre and proceeded to give us directions as to how to get there. We were extremely grateful for he had driven 2 miles out of his way , found the fayre then driven one mile back to find us .

Following his directions within 20 minutes we were at the Fayre talking to Michael the German Baker sampling and buying his wonderful fresh bread and cakes.

We did not tell Michael we got lost and we hope you will not either . We had a wonderful walk around the countryside around Tidworth , discovered Tedworth House and the Tidworth Polo ground , but the highlight of our day was meeting a true gentleman who went out of his way to help us.

So until the next time we meet , we wish you similar good fortune .
Steven and Angelika

List.ly brings your Twitter lists to life

Share

Twitter lists help us to make sense out of the chaos and noise on Twitter

We can add people we are interested in to lists allowing us to focus, making Twitter more manageable and useful.Instead of reading the tweets of everyone we follow in one continuous stream we can simply follow several Twitter lists in Hootsuite.

I follow twitter lists I made for of Prospect Networking friends , my list of news feeds , a list by Jorgen Paulsen of Empire Avenue members and one by Annie Diamond for Xeeme

Nick Kellet and the team at List.ly have now added several new dimensions to the new Listing Facility released today .

Now you can create List.ly lists directly from your Twitter lists .

As soon as you publish the list people visiting the list can vote on their favorite people and quickly follow them on Twitter. Twitter lists have been given new life by the team at List.ly .

The list can be sorted by votes , alphabetically and by the date added the the list , you can items in a list you are viewing to one of your own lists.

Finally you can embed any List.ly list into your blog posts

If you want to read more about List.ly and Twitter then you can visit my friend Sarah Arrows blog post here

For a step by step guide visit Mike Gingerich’s site

A couple of years ago I created a Twitter list of celebrities and now it has been List.ly’d . A shortened version appears below , so you can vote for your favourites ,add people to the list, copy them to your own list easily and follow them on Twitter .

Content Creation and Curation for Everyone

Share

Once you have taken the decision to create an online presence the first hurdle you face is – ‘How are you going to create the Content people will want to read ?’ .

There are of course people who output totally self penned content and having crafted it publish and promote it daily.

I am not one of these people , I simply do not have the time for all my content to be self penned. I do however post every day on Facebook,Twitter, Google plus and LinkedIn.

How can I find interesting and topical information created by others in order to share is the key question.

The first step is to determine topics in which I am interested and which will be of interest to my audience. The topics should be relevant to my business however they should be varied in order not to bore anyone who reads my ramblings.

Ideally they should be a mixture of business and personal.

It is possible to use applications which will not only discover fresh content and promote it daily with your contribution limited to simply setting up the system. In this way you have a daily presence but it is not personal, people will quickly realise this and stop reading.

We need systems which will alert us to relevant information and allow us to select items and comment on them before promoting them via Twitter and Facebook.

In the next blog posts I will be taking an in depth review of the systems I have used successfully over the last two years . We will be exploring Scoop.it , Swayy , GaggleAmp and more including Empire Avenue

At the end of the series of blog posts you will have at your fingertips a number of free resources which will help create and maintain a presence online and build your reputation.

The next blog post in there series is here  and this one tells you how to help your friends too .

Software that makes Android Rock

Share

Whether you use an Android phone or a tablet the key to maximising use and benefits  of the device is having the right software.

The Google Play store makes it easy to discover and download applications and many of them are free .

Below is a list of the must have Android apps which are currently on my Samsung tablet , they allow me to stay in touch and to work wherever I am. I may well have  missed your favourite apps and would love to hear about them.

If you are getting started with Android , I hope that you will find some of the apps listed of interest . I

The list is editable , so if you have apps on your Android that you find extremely useful , could you add them to the list please .

We can then share the best of the best .

PS In fact the only thing I cannot do on my Android  is code Delphi applications.

101 Things to do with a Brick

Share

This is my first blog post on my new site and my first blog for a while since I have been busy writing software for distributors and manufacturers for the last six months.

Blogs posts can be planned , created as a result of hard work and perspiration or can simply be inspired . This blog is the latter.

I am inspired by two recent happenings , being invited to guest blog on a very sociable blogging network and my use of the wonderful software created by Nick Kellet and his team at List.ly .

Many of us like to make lists , to do lists , shopping lists and reminder lists .

Then there are the bloggers who write posts which are essentially lists giving 101 useful Twitter applications , 7 places to source content for your blog .. the lists are endless.

The genius of a list blog is that we are attracted by the use of numbers in a title and we are ever hopeful of finding just one gem in the list that will be extremely useful.

Now I have started a list grandly entitled ‘101 Things to do with a Brick ‘ and it is a list with a difference , at the moment it is incomplete and I have left it so that you can add your own ideas . You will be helping to create this blog post and your ideas will be promoted.

For this is no ordinary blog post , it is an interactive blog and in addition to commenting you can  help build a list

Of course this is not a really useful list , but it is an experiment in blogging .

Please add your uses for a brick in the list by pressing the [Add to List] button below on the right at the top of the list .. looking for some inspired ideas 🙂
